Helminth parasites of Xiphophorus birchmanni (Pisces: Poeciliidae) from two localities of the Pánuco River drainage, Mexico

Abstract: Specimens of Xiphophorus birchmanni (Teleostei: Poeciliidae) (55 individuals) (Sheepshead swordtail) were collected from 2 localities in the Pánuco River drainage from Hidalgo and Veracruz [at Atlatipa (n = 26) and Benito Juárez (n = 29), respectively], México. The structure of the parasite communities of fish from the 2 localities was examined and compared. Helminths from 10 taxa were recovered: 6 species of larval digeneans (Posthodiplostomum sp., Uvulifer sp., Centrocestus formosanus, Ascocotyle sp., Haplor… Show more

“…For characterization of the infection, prevalence, abundance, mean intensity, and range of intensity were quantified according to Bush et al (1997) and Bautista-Hernández et al (2015). To evaluate potential correlations between abundance of helminths species and the snout-vent length of the frogs from each sex and locality, a Pearson correlation test was performed, and dispersion diagrams were plotted in RStudio v. 2022.07.2 (RStudio, 2020.…”

“…The taxonomic classification of nematodes was in accordance with Vicente et al (1995) , Moravec (1982) , Moravec (2001) , De Ley & Blaxter (2002) and Gibbons (2010) . The ecological indices of parasitism were analyzed according to Bush et al (1997) , Bautista-Hernández et al (2015) and Reiczigel et al (2019) .…”

“…In the same way, the Berger-Parker index was calculated, which indicates the degree of dominance for the species with the highest frequency in the parasitic community. Its calculation yields values between 0–1, where values close to 1 show a high dominance (Equation (3)) [ 48 , 49 ] …”
