This paper aims to provide an empirical prediction of residential well-being (RWB) and sense of community (SoC) among Chinese rural-urban migrants (RUMs). Multiple linear regressions are used with survey data derived from a representative sample of 15 migrant villages located in three major urban regions of China in order to evaluate the contributions of socioeconomic factors, living conditions, and neighborhood conditions to the SoC score and RWB score. The majority of the sample consists of middle-aged, married men who live in shared housing, are registered in the agricultural Hukou (household registration) system, and have subpar housing. Empirical analyses show that, after adjusting for socioeconomic factors, living conditions, and community neighborhood conditions, Hukou status (urban or rural) significantly influences the RWB score rather than the SoC score. In the simultaneous equation models, the following factors can predict the SoC score and RWB score: age, gender, educational attainment, home ownership, number of housing facilities, monthly household income, number of living rooms, number of problem-solving channels, and converted residences. The SoC score and RWB score have a moderately strong correlation. Therefore, improving the living, institutional, socioeconomic, and neighborhood conditions will help to improve the SoC and RWB of RUMs.

BackgroundIn a response to the lack of public awareness of dementia, ‘ageing in place’ and ‘dementia‐friendly community’ policies have been proposed, and a number of relevant studies have been carried out.AimTo map the evidence of public help for people with dementia in the community.DesignA scoping review.MethodsA comprehensive search of nine databases was conducted to find studies from the inception of the databases to January 2024. We developed our inclusion criteria to identify studies about public help for people with dementia in the community. Data from included studies were charted (purposively designed template) and narrated synthesis in relation to the study's research questions.ResultsOf 34 studies included, we found that difficult situations were encountered by people with dementia after developing cognitive, behavioural and psychological symptoms. We identified three types of helping behaviour, namely, formal planned, informal planned and spontaneous helping behaviour, which were influenced by general demographic characteristics, knowledge, attitudes, responsibilities and understanding. Fourteen studies proposed interventions to promote public help for people with dementia in the community, covering three categories of teaching, practical and web‐based methods.ConclusionsIt is necessary to develop a systematic intervention to promote public helping behaviour according to the characteristics of people with dementia and the modifiable influencing factors of helping behaviour.Patient or Public ContributionNo patient or public contribution. BackgroundThis study developed a short version of a scale measuring attitudes toward people living with dementia, the Four‐Item Attitudes toward People Living with Dementia Scale (APDS4), that could be included in a large population survey.MethodsWe used three datasets from Japan: a web panel survey, a community‐based mail survey, and data from a randomised controlled trial on dementia education. The original scale used was the Attitudes toward People Living with Dementia Scale developed by Kim and Kuroda. Test–retest reliability and item response theory analyses were used to reduce the number of items. The reliability, internal consistency, validity, and responsiveness of the short version were evaluated.ResultsSix items with low test–retest reliability and four items with low discrimination parameters were removed from the 14‐item scale. The APDS4, consisting of four items, had test–retest reliability and internal consistency comparable to those of the original scale. Confirmatory factor analysis indicated that the APDS4 fit a unidimensional model. The validity of the APDS4 was confirmed by significant associations between the APDS4 scores and the original scale scores, knowledge of dementia, helping behaviour intentions toward people living with dementia, helping behaviour experience, attending the Dementia Supporter Training Course, and engagement in healthcare jobs. In a randomised controlled trial dataset, the APDS4 was more responsive to educational interventions than the original scale.ConclusionThe shortened APDS4 was established as a reliable, validated, and responsive scale. This scale can be used efficiently in population surveys to evaluate dementia‐friendly initiatives at the community level.
