Helping children value and appreciate nature

Abstract: Children are naturally curious about their world and enjoy exploring their surroundings. Because of their inquiring minds, children are eager to know why things are the way they are and will ask many questions about their immediate environment. On a recent nature walk children could be heard asking, "I wonder what is under the rocks?" "What is that bird eating?" "Does that flower smell?" and "Why are the ants fighting?" Childhood is the time to encourage and nurture early interests in nature.

This is consistent with the results of research that early childhood education, environmental education, and social-emotional support help improve children's development in a holistic manner.…”

“…Nature education and outdoor experiences help children gain a respect for living things, stimulate their curiosity, and provide them with meaningful life experiences (Cooper Marcus, 1992;Bullock, 1994). Gardening and environmental education programs promote positive attitudes toward the environment in elementary school children (Jaus, 1984;Skelly and Zajicek, 1998;Waliczek and Zajicek, 1999).…”

“…Based on what we found, some teachers explained that learning is by book and in our surroundings -nature. The value of nature education is that children can get a foundation to help them in making sense of their world, and they will have a more comprehensive understanding of the reallife context that they cannot get only from books in Bullock, 1994. Children will also develop a deep curiosity, respect, and appreciation for nature (Bullock, 1994). Therefore, when the teacher encourages parents to take their children to nature while they are working, it is an effective strategy to continue children's learning process with the parents' help.…”
