Hemangioma of the Kidney

Abstract: A multifocal cavernous hemangioma was found in the renal pelvis of a young male, in whom intermittent macroscopic hematuria developed. Selective angiography was found to be normal on two occasions. By means of preoperative ureterorenoscopy a presumptive diagnosis of hemangioma was made. Nephrectomy was performed because the location of the lesion precluded partial nephrectomy.

“…About 200 cases of renal hemangioma have been reported since the original description by Virchow in 1867 [3]. Usually renal hemangioma is a solitary and uni- lateral mass with no predilection for side or sex and with a peak incidence in patients aged from 30 to 40 years [1,3,4].…”

“…1 Because hemangiomas can regress spontaneously due to secondary degenerative changes, as seen in the present case, a conservative approach towards their treatment has been recommended in the literature. 1,2,[5][6][7] However, nephrectomy has actually been performed because of the difficulty of making a differential diagnosis from renal cell carcinoma. 2,[5][6][7] Tumor resection could be performed in the present case because the tumor was outside the renal parenchyma.…”

The role of nephron-sparing surgery in the treatment of renal cell carcinomas is currently under debate.…”
