Hematocrit as a simple method to predict and manage ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome in assisted reproduction

Abstract: AIM:The aim was to analyze the hematocrit levels in cases of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), syndrome occurring during in-vitro fertilization (IVF), and study its role as a prognostic indicator.SUBJECTS AND METHODS:Two years data of 66 women at high risk for developing OHSS was analyzed. Twenty-seven women who developed OHSS were further analyzed based on their hematocrit levels on the day of oocyte pick-up (OPU) and the day of embryo transfer (ET) to see if there was a prognostic trend.RESULTS:Of th… Show more

“…The majority of this study's cases have oxygen saturation < 85%, with the lowest saturation which is 66%. The mean hematocrit value in this study is relatively high (42%) compared to a similar study from India (35.3%) [ 23 ]. Most cases show polycythemia (Hb > 16 g/dL), indicating chronic hypoxia ( Table 2 ).…”

“…Finally, because patients with PCOS, in particular those presenting the three Rotterdam criteria, have a higher risk of developing an OHSS, the main iatrogenic complication of PCOS that can be aggravated by pregnancy 66 , we also measured rat hematocrit the day of oocyte retrieval. Indeed, hemoconcentration is one of symptoms of OHSS and hematocrit was shown recently to predict OHSS the day of ovarian puncture 67 . Hematocrit was found higher in compiled 3–4 and 6-month-old GK rats than in Wistar rats (Fig.…”
