Hematological and hemostaseological alterations after warm and cold limb ischemia-reperfusion in a canine model

Abstract: PURPOSE: Acute ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) of extremities means serious challenge in the clinical practice. Furthermore, the issue of preventive cooling is still controversial. In this canine model we investigated whether limb I/R -with or without cooling- has an influence on hematological and hemostaseological factors. METHODS: Femoral vessels were exposed and clamped for 3 hours. After release the clamps, 4-hour reperfusion was secured. The same procedures with cooling using ice bags, as well as warm and cold… Show more

“…With the exception of the MCHC values, our results concerning RBCs, Hb, MCV, MCH and HCT are similar to those of a study using a canine model to investigate limb IR, with or without cooling 35 . Dehydration during surgery or fluid sequestration due to edema can result in a higher-than-normal HCT level 36 .…”

“…In different experimental reports Ovx animals are used immediately, few days, or 1 to 4 weeks after ovariectomy [ 22 , 51 ]. The current report indicates that there is a critical surgery recovery period to be considered for the experimentation with Ovx animals to minimize hematological changes due to the surgery that could impact experimental results [ 48 ]. Ovariectomy in rodents has proven to be a useful model for menopause, however, the time of ovariectomy and timing of hormone replacement influence importantly the evaluation of the E 2 target effects.…”

“…Previously we studied the effect of hind limb ischemiareperfusion on hematological and blood coagulation parameters, and we also saw the critical importance of 1 st postoperative week 29 . Inflammatory processes, acute phase reactions can be associated with alterations with hemorheological parameters, too 30,31 .…”
