Heme oxygenase-1 mediates the anti-allergic actions of quercetin in rodent mast cells

Abstract: These results strongly suggest that quercetin exerted anti-allergic actions via activation of Nrf2-HO-1 pathway.

“…14,15 In addition, HO-1 exerts its effects on multiple immune cells, such as promoting maturation, differentiation and function of dendritic cells, 16,17 inhibiting the antigen-presenting function of dendritic cells, 18 inducing tolerance of dendritic cells 19 and suppressing degranulation of mast cells. 20,21 In previous studies, HO-1 was found to enhance the function of CD4 + CD25 + regulatory T cells. 13,22 Recent studies have shown that the expression of HO-1 is significantly up-regulated in T helper type 2…”

“…Naringenin (flavonones) suppressed the activation of 1-4, 6, and 8 pathways and the downstream signal transducer of 2 and 12 [34,46,47] and induced production of 13 [48]. Quercetin (flavonols) modulated 1-2 [49] and 12-13 pathways [32,50], reduced the expression of 14 and 16 [32,51], inhibited 11 [52] degradation and attenuated the activation of points 3-10 [32,53]. Butein (chalcone) inhibited 11 degradation [54] and 1-2, 4-6, and 12 activation [54,55].…”

“…Bilirubin and biliverdin, the metabolites of HO-1, have been reported to exhibit immunomoduratory effects including the inhibition of NF-κB activity [25,26] . We also reported that quercetin increased the levels of bilirubin in mast cells, suggesting that bilirubin and by quercetin-induced HO-1 expression reflected attenuation of NF-κB activity [15] . However, HO-1 has been reported to inhibit NF-κB activity without modulating the nuclear translocation in endothelial cells [27] .…”

“…We previously reported that quercetin exerted cytoprotective effects via Nrf2-HO-1 pathway in mast cells, fibroblasts, and epithelial cells [15][16][17] . We next investigated whether quercetin was able to induce HO-1 in AMJ2-C11 cells.…”
