Hemolymphangioma in the posterior mediastinum: a case report and literature review

Abstract: Hemolymphangioma of the thorax is a very rare benign tumor. There were only three reports of this disease until 2016. Herein, we report a case of hemolymphangioma of the thorax with pleural effusion. A 57-year-old woman had been admitted to hospital. Computed tomography also demonstrated a heterogenous mass in the posterior mediastinum and suspected invasion to the artery. Surgery was performed. The mediastinal tumor was soft. The pathological diagnosis was a hemolymphangioma of the posterior mediastinum. Her … Show more

“…Hemolymphangioma typically originates from congenital malformations of the vascular and lymphatic system. Only a small number of cases have been reported in the mediastinum ( 13 – 19 ), spleen ( 4 , 6 ) and neck ( 20 ). In previously reported cases, completely cystic and/or multifocal hemolymphangioma were extremely rare.…”

“…Imaging is needed for diagnosis and preoperative planning [ 1 , 3 , 4 ]. Contrast-enhanced Chest CT is the preferred imaging method for thymoma because it can show the location, size, shape, density and relationship with surrounding tissues by enhancement [ 5 , 7 ]. Pericardial thymoma can be confused in the CT with a malignant teratoma or lymphoma, as they both can present as well-defined masses with heterogeneous densities [ 1 , 6 ].…”

“…It has been reported in pancreas, limbs, neonatal mediastinum, chest wall, anterior mediastinum, posterior mediastinum, pericardium, tongue, orbit, retroperitoneum, esophagus, cervix, adrenal gland, kidney, liver and spleen. However, there are few reports of retroperitoneal hemolymphangioma [1][2][3][4][5].In this article, we report a case of giant retroperitoneal hemolymphangioma, and discuss the clinical, imaging, and treatment options based on the published literature.…”
