The direct Coombs test, Schumm's test, haemoglobin electrophoresis, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase screen, plasma iron and iron binding capacity, red cell 2,3-diphosphoglycerate and reduced glutathione levels (7) were all either normal or negative.
