“…Until now, HUS due to interferon therapy has been reported in a case with chronic myelogenous leukemia only [6, 7], and no case has been reported of HUS complicating interferon therapy for chronic hepatitis.…”

“…Recently, 7 cases of TTP have been encountered in patients with CML treated with IFN-α. In 4 of these, the patients received IFN-α and HU [8, 9, 10]; in 2 other cases, TTP occurred during the blastic phase of the disease [11, 12]. Shammas et al [14]described a case of TTP in a patient with CML treated by HU.…”

“…Autoimmune disorders have also been reported, such as hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenic purpura, hepatitis, thyroiditis and systemic lupus erythematosus [6, 7]. Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is infrequent with IFN-α, and only a few cases have been reported [8, 9, 10, 11, 12]. In our case, we suspect a clear relationship between TTP and IFN-α, and we discuss the role of IFN-α in the pathogenesis of this disease.…”

“…The only previously reported case of TTP in CML was on hydroxyurea and there were no signs of blastic transformation [4]. Several HUS and renal thrombotic microangiopathy cases have been associated with interferon-α therapy in CML, hairy cell leukemia and hepatitis C [5, 6, 7, 8, 9]. The only other case in which interferon-α could possibly be linked to the development of TTP was described by Moses et al [11]in a case of hairy cell leukemia.…”

“…TTP associated with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) has been described in the context of allogeneic bone marrow transplantation and only one case of CML on hydroxyurea who developed fatal TTP has been reported [4]. There are, however, several reports on the occurrence of the hemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS) in patients treated with interferon-α [5, 6, 7, 8, 9]. The two patients described forthwith developed typical TTP following interferon-induced remission of chronic myelogenous leukemia.…”
