Hemorrhagic cystitis: a retrospective single‐center survey

Abstract: Severe hemorrhagic cystitis (HC) may be a life-threatening complication in allogeneic stem cell transplantation (SCT). In order to improve the strategies for prophylaxis and treatment, we retrospectively analyzed data on patients who underwent SCT at our center from 1990 through 2005. Patients with HC were identified through our database and their medical charts were reviewed. Grades 2-5 and 3-5 HC developed in 109/834 patients (13.1%) and 27/834 patients (3.2%), respectively. The frequency of HC decreased ove… Show more

“…Demographic risk features include male sex (Asano et al, 2003;Hale et al, 2003) and age >10 years (Kondo et al, 1998;Seber et al, 1999;Cesaro et al, 2003;Cheuk et al, 2007). GvHD is a consistent risk factor in paediatric (Russell et al, 1994;Hale et al, 2003;Cheuk et al, 2007) mixed (Seber et al, 1999;El-Zimaity et al, 2004;Hassan et al, 2007) and adult (Chakrabarti et al, 2003) study cohorts. Busulphan (Kondo et al, 1998;Trotman et al, 1999) and cyclophosphamide conditioning (Brugieres et al, 1989;Cheuk et al, 2007), important risk factors for pre-engraftment HC, also seem to increase risk of post-engraftment HC.…”

“…Hemorrhagic cystitis (HC) may occur after HSCT either as early-onset disease due to conditioning toxicity, or late-onset disease associated with GVHD or viral infections such as BK virus, adenovirus, and cytomegalovirus (CMV) [4,5,6,7,8,9]. The incidence of HC after HSCT has been reported to range from 10 to 70%.…”
