Hepatic Epithelioid Angiomyolipoma and 18F-FDG PET/CT

Abstract: Hepatic epithelioid angiomyolipoma (AML) is rare. Although generally epithelioid AML shows benign biological behavior, it can occasionally have malignant potential. In this study, we report a case of 2 hepatic epithelioid AMLs with different F-FDG uptake; one is intensely FDG avid, and the other is non-FDG avid.

“…Among 105 patients reported in the literature, 12 patients had hepatitis B virus (HBV), and two had hepatitis C virus infection (Table 2). 1,6,12,1646 Few patients were found to have HEAML complicated with HBV. However, hepatitis B-positive patients with HCC are quite common, so the diagnosis and treatment of patients requires care to avoid misdiagnosis.…”

“…Moreover, the isoinverse phase of T1WI can determine whether there is fat concomitancy inside the lesion, and cystic necrosis inside the lesion is more clearly visible (12). There are only a few literature reports on PET/CT of liver PEComas, and according to the composition of the epithelioid tissue contained in the tumor, its presentation can range from no 18 F-FDG uptake to obviously increased 18 F-FDG uptake (13)(14)(15). Our patient showed equal and low mixed densities on CT, with slightly high signal intensity on T1WI in the same phase and low signal intensity in the opposite phase, indicating the presence of fatty components in the lesion.…”

“…We also report a protocol for FDG-PET/CT acquisition. FDG-PET/CT imaging of the liver is usually done for the evaluation of neoplastic lesions in clinical routine [23][24][25][26][27][28][29][30]. In our study, we, for the first time, used FDG-PET/CT for the assessment of viable physiologic hepatic tissue of human and nonhuman organs perfused outside the body for 1 week.…”
