Hepatic schistosomiasis, upper gastrointestinal bleeding, and health related quality of life measurements from the Albert Nile Basin

Abstract: Background Health related quality of life measurements are vital elements of public health surveillance that uncover unmet health needs and predict the success of health interventions. We described health related quality of life measurements using the EuroQoL 5-dimension (EQ-VAS/EQ-5D) instrument and associated factors among patients with upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB) and hepatic schistosomiasis at a rural health facility in the Albert Nile Basin, Uganda. … Show more

“…The fibrosis can cause blockage of the main portal vein leading to portal hypertension and portosystemic collaterals such as oesophageal varices that when ruptured confer a high probability of death. 3 Despite the clinical severity, there are no routine treatment strategies for individuals with PPF. The current World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines for schistosomiasis 4 focus on current infection as a proxy indicator for assessing morbidities associated with schistosomiasis, including PPF.…”

“…In chronic infections, the embolization of Schistosoma eggs into the liver and portal system results in chronic inflammation, tissue injury, and progressive tissue fibrosis. Advanced disease is distinguished by extensive periportal fibrosis, portal hypertension, varices, upper gastrointestinal bleeding, splenomegaly, and ascites [10][11][12].…”
