Hepatitis B immunization strategies: timing is everything

Abstract: Chronic HBV infection, with the attendant risk of cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma, occurs in 1%-5% of adults and up to 90% of infants who are infected with HBV.3-5 Providing vaccinations during adolescence without offering vaccinations during infancy misses this critical period when the acquisition of a HBV infection can be the most harmful. Epidemiologic studies show that the age distribution of HBV varies by jurisdiction and suggest that roughly one-third of chronic infections are acquired during infa… Show more

“…In 2004, it was estimated that over 350 million people were chronically infected with the hepatitis B virus worldwide and at risk of serious illness and death (WHO, 2009a , 2009;and Mackie et al, 2009). In France, hepatitis B vaccination remains controversial, given ongoing speculation over possible side effects.…”

“…The immunogenicity of the HBV vaccine is not 100%, and requires multiple dosing to achieve protective antibody levels (≥ 10 IU/L) (Mackie et al, 2009). The primary determinant of seroprotection is the age at which an individual is vaccinated.…”
