Hepatitis B Prevalence and Infection Control Among Dental Health Care Workers in a Community in South Korea

Abstract: About 37 percent (120 of 327) of dental health care workers surveyed in this study in Korea did not receive the vaccine against HBV infection. Basic barrier techniques to prevent cross-contamination were not being used consistently. Nationwide guidelines for barrier techniques and hepatitis vaccinations should be developed and disseminated to dental personnel.

“…Furthermore, identifying those capable of transmitting HBV is difficult, since many infected patients may be unaware of their carrier status, may be asymptomatic or simply may not want to disclose their infectious condition (12). Hence, dentists need to be extra cautious, especially as vaccination cannot guarantee immunoprotection (1,4,6,13,15), not to mention that many dentists/physicians do not even attempt to receive it (1,5,6,13).…”

“…43% of the dentists in Song's study had no idea about their Anti-Hbs condition (20). These researchers concluded that despite the general acceptance of vaccination, dentists had insufficient knowledge of the importance of serological tests after vaccination (19)(20)(21). The current study attained similar results; not only did respondents not know their AntiHbstitre, they were also unable to analyze the results of the serological tests.…”

Similarly 96.4% don't consider the changing of gloves as wastage of time and resources.…”
