Hepatitis B Virus Vaccine for Patients with Hepatitis C Virus Infection

Abstract: Hepatitis C is a disease with varying rates of progression. The role of hepatitis B virus (HBV) as a cofactor in the development of hepatitis C virus (HCV)-related cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has been suggested and the use of HBV vaccine in all HCV-infected patients has been advocated. This review presents the implications of HBV and HCV coinfection and addresses the issues of HBV vaccine immunogenicity and safety in patients with chronic HCV infection.

“…A recent review of studies addressing the safety and tolerability of HBV vaccine in patients with chronic hepatitis C also found few side effects [26]. Among the trials reviewed, mild local reactions occurred in 7% to 20% of those vaccinated; additionally, general reactions such as headache, fever, and nausea occurred in 2% to 19%, with no serious adverse reactions being reported.…”

“…In view of the role of HBV as cofactor in the development of HCV related cirrhosis and HCC, vaccination of patients with chronic hepatitis C against HBV has been advocated with the presumption of avoiding additional liver injury [62,63]. …”

“…Patients with chronic HCV are at increased risk of complications from acute hepatitis A virus (HAV)6, acute hepatitis B virus (HBV)7, and by chronic co-infection with HBV8 compared to those without underlying liver disease. HAV and HBV are both vaccine-preventable diseases and the vaccines have been shown to be safe and effective in patients infected with chronic HCV9.…”
