“…In recent years, an increase in the number of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections has been observed among young women, in particular due to the intravenous use of psychoactive substances, piercing procedures and tattooing. 1,2 According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) (USA), the national rate of HCV infection among women giving birth in the U.S. increased by more than 400% from 0.8 per 1000 deliveries in 2000 to 4.1 in 2015. Rates were much higher (87.4 and 216.9/1000 deliveries, respectively) among women with a history of opioid use disorder, but an increase from 0.7 to 2.6/1000 deliveries was also observed in women who did not use opioids in the past.…”
