“…A number of cases of MA-related mortality have been reported, not only due to excessive use or overdosing, but also because of hypersensitivity to MA or the drug's prominent hypertensive effects (e.g., Delaney and Estes 1980;Hall et al 1973). In addition, MA abusers have significantly elevated infection rates for diseases such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) as a result of both injection drug use (i.e., needle sharing) and risky sexual behavior (e.g., unprotected sex), especially among the population of men who have sex with men (Bluthenthal et al 2001;Gonzales et al 2006;Halkitis et al 2001;Shoptaw 2006).…”

“…The immediate somatic effects of MA intake include increased blood pressure and heart rate (Newton et al, 2005), raising the risk for fatal cardiac rhythm disturbances and cerebral hemorrhaging (Mokhlesi et al, 2004) as well as acute coronary syndrome and myocardial infarction (Chen, 2007;Turnipseed et al, 2003;Wijetunga et al, 2004). Moreover, MA using populations are at high risk of infection with Hepatitis C virus (Gonzales et al, 2006) and HIV (Peck et al, 2005;Shoptaw et al, 2003) and frequently develop severe dental decay and multiple caries (Donaldson and Goodchild, 2006). MA users also have significant rates of co-morbid mood and anxiety disorders and are at significantly higher risk of developing a psychotic disorder than the general population and may continue to experience psychotic symptoms even years after stopping MA use (Zweben et al, 2004).…”

“…Drug use was a significant risk factor associated with HCV infection 14,[31][32][33][34] , particularly injected drugs 8,15,35 . Use of heroin and speedball were significantly associated with HCV infection, but the risk is much higher among Hispanics than their White-Non Hispanics counterparts.…”
