Hepatitis E Virus in Pork Food Chain, United Kingdom, 2009–2010

Abstract: We investigated contamination by hepatitis E virus (HEV) in the pork production chain in the United Kingdom. We detected HEV in pig liver samples in a slaughterhouse, in surface samples from a processing plant, and in pork sausages and surface samples at point of sale. Our fi ndings provide evidence for possible foodborne transmission of HEV during pork production. D uring the past 10 years, hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection acquired in industrialized regions worldwide in the apparent absence of contaminated d… Show more

“…HEV is a major cause of acute hepatitis in developing countries, and caused more than 20 million people infection in the world . Zoonotic transmission of HEV has been firmly confirmed from swine, cow, or camel to human or non‐human primate by raw or uncooked meat or milk . In this study, HEV RNA was positive in the feces, serum, and milk of goat, and HEV antigens were abundantly observed in the liver and spleen, which indicated the high risk of consuming goat.…”

“…HEV was found in 8 of 18 locally produced sausages in the Toulouse region , and a direct link of HEV infections to eating air‐dried liver sausage in south‐eastern France has been documented . In the UK, 10% of pork sausages were contaminated at the point of sale . Genotype 3 HEV has also been found in a high proportion of Scottish shellfish, some of which were harvested from an area adjacent to an outflow pipe from a pig processing plant .…”

“…What is the reason for the declining prevalence in the last decades? There is now a growing body of evidence suggesting that autochthonous HEV infections are transmitted by ingestion of contaminated pork products . If this is the major mode of transmission, then there must also have been a significant reduction in alimentary exposure to HEV in the past decades, presumably resulting in the interruption of HEV transmissions.…”
