Hepatoprotective effect of the ethyl acetate extract of Teucrium polium L. against carbontetrachloride-induced hepatic injury in rats

Abstract: Hepatoprotective activity of the ethyl acetate extract of Teucrium polium L. was investigated using rats with CCl 4 --induced liver damage. Specific biochemical parameters (glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, reduced glutathione and total antioxidative status) were estimated in blood and in liver homogenate. Lipid peroxidation in CCl 4 -intoxicated rats was evidenced by a marked increment in the levels of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances. Histopatological examinations of the liver were underta… Show more

“…The livers of rats treated with T. oliverianum extract exhibited an almost normal architecture, with the presence of double nucleus hepatocytes, except for a slight deformity of hepatocytes with pyknosis and clearing of cytoplasm. These histological findings asserted the hepatoprotective and anticancer efficacy of T. oliverianum (Panovska et al, 2007). Photomicrograph of liver tissue section of rat in HCC group treated with R. stricta extract showed focal of anaplastic hepatocytes associated with congestion in the portal vein.…”

“…Medicinal properties of various species of Teucrium are reported in literature showing antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal activities [3-7]. Teucrium polium has been reported to possess antispasmodic, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, [8], hepatoprotective effect, [9] and analgesic properties [10]. While Teucrium chamaedrys has been used as antimalarial, antispasmodic and for gastric pain, kidney disorders, heart diseases etc [11,12].…”
