Hepatoprotective potentials of methanol extract of T. conophorum seeds of carbon tetrachloride induced liver damage in Wistar rats

Abstract: Background: Tetracarpidium conophorum (TC) is a tropical plant used in ethno medicine for treating various diseases including hepatic ailments. The present study investigated the effect of methanol extract of T. conophorum seeds in rats intoxicated with CCl 4 24 h and 48 h after intoxication respectively. Methods: Thirty-five male Wistar rats were distributed equally into seven groups. Group IA (control) received distilled water and olive oil (i.p), group IIA rats were intoxicated with CCl 4 in olive oil (600 … Show more

“…In this study, a single dose of carbon tetrachloride administered to rats caused significant elevations of AST, ALT, ALP, and GGT activities when compared to the control group. Our results correlated with a previous report [ 31 ]. Conversely, treatment with GA at both the lower and higher doses attenuated the increased serum enzymes activities in CCl 4 -induced hepatic damage in Wistar rats ( Fig.…”

“…Under normal circumstances, these enzymes (AST and ALT) reside in the hepatocytes. However, these enzymes will leak into the blood stream if the liver is injured, thus raising their levels in the blood (Oriakhi et al, 2018). In a research work carried out by Eraj et al (2016) aqueous extract of C. citratus was administered at a dose of 200 mg/kg body weight orally for 15 days to healthy rabbit.…”
