The use of medicinal plants in the treatment of harmful impacts of xenobiotics in animals is attracting an increasing attention in recent times. The aim of the current study is to assess the preventive potential of Costus afer aqueous leaves extract (CAAE) in treating metabolic aberrations imposed by crude oil contaminated diet inWistar albino rats. Six groups of rats were treated as follows: A = Normal diet; B=Normal diet + 100 mg/kg body weight of CAAE; C =Normal diet + 200 mg/kg body weight of CAAE; D= Crude oil contaminated diet; E= crude oil contaminated diet + 100 mg/kg body weight of CAAE, F = crude oil contaminated diet + 200 mg/kg body weight of CAAE. After thirty days of exposure to the diet and administration of the corresponding plant extracts, the rats were sacrificed with chloroform and the required organs were excised. The hematological indices, as well as function indicators and levels of drug metabolizing enzymes in the liver and kidney, were investigated with standard protocols. The results indicated that the hematological parameters and kidney and liver function indices were altered in rats fed with crude oil contaminated diet. However, the values came close to those in control rats when Costus afer aqueous extracts were administered. Similarly, the activities of oxidase enzymes (aldehyde oxidase, monoamine oxidase, xanthine oxidase, and sulphite oxidase), following their inhibition by the ingestion of crude oil contaminated diet, equally restored close to control values upon treatment with Costus afer aqueous extract. This study, therefore, was able to establish an aqueous extract of Costus aferleave as an antidote for crude oil intoxication.

There have been major concerns that the nephrotoxicity of commercial formulations of Roundup herbicide is due to the active ingredient glyphosate. We therefore investigated and compared the mechanisms underlining the nephrotoxicity of Roundup herbicide and glyphosate alone in rat. Fifty-six adult male rats randomized into 7 groups of 8 rats per group were exposed to Roundup formulation and glyphosate alone daily by gavage at 3.6, 50.4, and 248.4 mg/kg body weight (bw) of glyphosate concentrations for 12 weeks with distilled water administered to the control group. Kidney biomarker (serum urea and creatinine, plasma cystatin-C, and neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin), oxidative stress indices in the kidney tissue, activities of kidney membrane-bound enzymes (Mg-adenosine triphosphatase [ATPase], Ca-ATPase, Na/K-ATPase, and total ATPase), and histopathological changes in the kidney were monitored. Glyphosate concentration in the kidney was quantified by high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection. Significant ( P < 0.05) alterations in the levels of the kidney biomarker, oxidative stress markers, and membrane-bound enzymes were observed in the rats exposed to Roundup compared to the rats exposed to glyphosate alone. Rats exposed to Roundup accumulated more glyphosate residue in their kidney tissue. Severe histopathological lesions were only seen in the kidneys of rats exposed to Roundup. The nephrotoxicity observed cannot be due to the active ingredient in the Roundup formulation, as glyphosate alone has virtually no effect on the renal function of the exposed animals. Therefore, the general claim attributing nephrotoxicity of a glyphosate-based herbicide to its active ingredient should be discouraged.

Background: Petrol, xylene, and thinner are volatile organic compounds (VOCs), a major class of pollutants that affect the chemistry of the atmosphere and animals including man. The principal mode of contamination is via inhalation. This study aims to elucidate the effects of these compounds on bio-chemical functions in the body of the mouse, Mus musculus Methods: One hundred and twenty adult albino Mus musculus species were randomly assigned to groups (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2, and D1) based on their weights (8-13g for juveniles and 15 – 21g for adults) with specific treatments. The control treatment, A1, was housed in a plastic experimental house free from the test chemical vapor while groups A2 and B1; B2 and C1; C2 and D1 were exposed to pet-rol, thinner, and xylene respectively in wooden exposure chambers for six hours daily for sixty days. Levels of oxidative stress markers (GSH, SOD, CAT, and MDA) were determined using the spectrophotometry. Results: A significant decrease in the values of GSH, activities of SOD and CAT, were observed when compared to the mice in the control experiment as daily exposure to the selected vapor increased. On the other hand, MDA levels increased significantly with increasing daily exposure to vapor from the test chemicals, when compared to the control rats. Conclusion: Based on the findings from this study, the decrease in the SOD, CAT and GSH levels are indications of toxic build up in the blood implying that exposures to these VOCs inhibit natural processes. Thus, VOCs are detrimental to human health and long-term exposure to these organic com-pounds could result in deleterious sub-lethal effects, especially to individual exposed occupationally to them
