“…Many literature data indicate that the introduction of nanosized POSSs into polymers gives rise to nanocomposites showing better thermal properties than virgin polymers [20,21] and that the nature and number of the organic substituents attached to a silicon-oxygen cage largely affect not only the characteristics of POSSs [22,23], but also those of the systems prepared with them. Due to the relevant and increasing technological importance of POSSs, our group has planned and has in progress a wide research on the synthesis and the characterization of novel variously substituted POSSs with high resistance to thermal degradation, coupled with sufficiently good compatibility and solubility in polymer matrix [24,25], that can be used in the preparation of thermally stable polystyrene (PS) based nanocomposites [26,27]. High thermal stability is requested for these compounds because they can be subjected to high temperatures during processing or in service [28].…”

“…We thus synthesized some POSSs with aliphatic and aromatic bridges, with both isobutyl [30,31] and cyclopentyl [32] peripheries. Their thermal decomposition was studied and higher thermal stability was evidenced for cyclopentyl derivatives than for the isobutyl ones.…”

“…Some RR' 7 (SiO 1.5 ) 8 POSSs (where R' = cyclopentyl or isobutyl and R = C 6 H 5 -or one of its mono-, di-or tri-substituted derivatives) were previously synthesized and characterized [30,31], owing to their good compatibility and solubility in polymer matrices due to the presence of aliphatic and cycloaliphatic groups linked to silicon cage [32][33][34][35]. The results obtained indicated better thermal properties for heptacyclopentyl-POSSs in comparison with the corresponding heptaisobutyl-derivatives, and, in particular, phenyl, heptacyclopentyl-POSS (ph,hcp-POSS) appeared the most thermally stable [30,31]. Starting from this finding, ph,hcp-POSS/ PS nanocomposites were thus prepared by in situ polymerization of styrene in the presence of 3, 5 and 10% w/w of filler [36].…”

“…IC-POSS derivative 4a 27 and CC-POSS derivatives 7a, 33 7b, 34 and 8a 35 were prepared by following the literatures. Chlorodimethylsilane, chloro(ethyl)dimethylsilane, chlorodimethylvinylsilane, chlorodimethylphenylsilane, vinylcyclohexane, and octaphenyl-POSS (8b) were purchased from Tokyo Chemical Industry Co. (TCI) (Tokyo, Japan).…”
