Herbal medicine in oral lichen planus

Abstract: Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a common chronic inflammatory and T cell‐mediated autoimmune disease in which the oral mucosa, tongue, and gingiva are involved. Different treatments have been suggested to reduce the symptoms of this disease. Currently, a common treatment for OLP is the use of corticosteroids as the gold standard, although they have considerable side effects. The chronicity of the disease needs the long‐term use of these drugs with ensuing side effects. Therefore, various studies have been done to … Show more

“…However, further scientific analysis is required to validate thier efficacy. 28,29 MMP, like pemphigus vulgaris, are vesiculobullous diseases, which are autoimmune, inflammatory, and chronic diseases characterized by formation of subepithelial bubbles and linear deposition of IgG, IgA, or C3 along the basement membrane area. Lesions usually affect oral, conjunctival, genital, and digestive mucosa; however, skin manifestations are rare.…”

“…Herbal medicine has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties with favorable impacts on immune function and could play a critical role in complementing drug therapy [41]. The use of herbal medicine with anti-inflammatory properties also showed promising results in managing autoimmune diseases with oral manifestations, such as oral lichen planus, aphthous stomatitis, and Sjögren's syndrome, revealing the increasingly important role of herbal medicine in managing various inflammatory diseases [42][43][44].…”
