Herbicide Application Strategies for the Control of Rigid Ryegrass (Lolium rigidum) in Wide-Row Faba Bean (Vicia faba) in Southern Australia

Abstract: Two field experiments were undertaken at Roseworthy, South Australia from 2006 to 2007 to evaluate the performance of herbicide application strategies for the control of herbicide-resistant rigid ryegrass in faba bean grown in wide rows (WR). The standard farmer practice of applying postsowing PRE (PSPE) simazine followed by POST clethodim to faba bean grown in WR provided consistent and high levels of rigid ryegrass control (≥ 96%) and caused a large reduction (P < 0.05) in spike production (≤ 20 spikes m−… Show more

“…Therefore, greater rainfall after herbicide application in 2012 may be responsible for better weed control with propyzamide in 2012 than in 2013. Kleemann and Gill (2012) reported much higher levels of rigid ryegrass control with propyzamide (. 85%) in faba bean; however, the herbicide was applied early postsowing PRE rather than PPI as in this study.…”

“…Propyzamide can be an effective option for rigid ryegrass control provided sufficient rainfall is received after planting to keep the seedbed moist (Walker and Roberts 1975). Kleemann and Gill (2012) also reported effective control of rigid ryegrass with propyzamide (. 85%) in fava bean (Vicia faba L. [2014]) provided inferior weed control compared with farmers' standard practice in 2014 but not in 2013.…”

“…50% in 2014. Pyroxasulfone, propyzamide, and imazamox have been successfully used to control other grass weed species in broadleaf crops (Blackshaw 1998;Kleemann and Gill 2012;Nelson and Renner 1998;Tidemann et al 2014). Dimethenamid-P was less effective in reducing smooth barley seed production, but significantly increased grain and forage yields compared with the non- Figure 1.…”
