Herbicides in Camps Bay (Cape Town, South Africa), supplemented

Abstract: In 2017 sewage released into Camps Bay, Cape Town was nine fold more than rainfall.• Five herbicides were found in seawater, sediments and marine biota from Camps Bay. • The chemical load in sewage was not removed by a 3 mm screen pretreatment step. • The chemical signature found in marine biota was linked to herbicides in sewage. • Dilution of sewage by seawater did not prevent bioaccumulation of herbicides.

“…Pesticides comprise semi-volatile persistent organic pollutants (POPs), categorized by their use as biocides, fungicides, bactericides, insecticides, and herbicides [26,27,77]. Generally, a pesticide is defined as "any substance or combination of substances that is used to prevent or eradicate undesirable insects, including vectors of disease in animals, weeds, fungi, or other organisms in order to enhance food production, and to facilitate the processing, storage, transportation, or marketing of food and agricultural commodities" [78].…”

“…Irrespective of whether they are applied intentionally or by runoff, pesticides remain in various water sources for a long time due to their chemical properties such as adsorption and solubility [82]. In general, most herbicide monitoring studies are focused on surface freshwater sources such as lakes, rivers, and reservoirs, with a particular focus on organochlorine and organophosphorus compounds [26,27,77,79].…”
