Seamless use of information technology, internet of things, smart phones, and mobile applications is driving the digital transformation that tourism is undergoing today. A major area in tourism where technology finds immense untapped potential is interpretation of destinations especially heritage and pilgrim sites. Technology helps to present shrines in a better way through use of mixed realities, three-dimensional modelling, holograms, transmedia storytelling, etc. This can result in vibrant experiences that can engage tourists more at the site thereby indirectly resulting in promotion and branding. The list of sites that can be accessed virtually is constantly expanding worldwide. India offers vast untapped potential in this segment as many of the ancient temples and pilgrim centres have rich cultural and architectural significance. This chapter discusses the major technologies available for interpretation of cultural and religious sites as well as their present status and potential with respect to India.
