“…A quick glance at the literature appears to confirm this idea, as it is apparent that different fields of technical enquiry understand and articulate coherence in strikingly different ways. Thus, legal theorists often agree that coherence amounts to something more than mere consistency but short of entailment (see, e.g., Zaccaria , 266; MacCormick , 230), linguists drop attention to consistency and entailment but assert that “grammaticalness” or “textual continuity” must be a part of it (see, e.g., Randquist , 189–12; Charolles and Ehrlich ), whilst physicists in the science of optics understand coherence as an invariant phase relation obtaining between waves of light (see, e.g., Derode and Fink , 81–2; Mandel and Wolf ; and see Ziff 1984b). The idea that there are a number of different technical notions of coherence accounts neatly for the lack of consensus that is evident when surveying the elucidation of coherence across the range of its use.…”

“…The ideas developed by MacCormick in this paper and in his earlier Legal Reasoning and Legal Theory (MacCormick ) are now refined and collected in Rhetoric and the Rule of Law (MacCormick ), and have attracted considerable interest, not least for MacCormick's treatment of the core concept, as Zaccaria notes:
Though moving within the broad framework constituted by the extended consideration of coherence which, especially as put forward by Aarnio, Alexy and Peczenik, covers the range of hypotheses going from formal logical derivation to consistency, we shall here refer to the theses of the author who, in the contemporary debate so far, has perhaps given the clearest, most circumstantial presentation, namely Neil MacCormick. (Zaccaria , 266)
Significantly though, MacCormick never addresses the elucidation of coherence directly, turning instead to examine “normative coherence” and “narrative coherence,” particularly as these relate to legal justification. Moreover, MacCormick never turns to consider how much of what is uncovered about these topics is owed to the nature of narrative, or of norms, and how much to coherence itself.…”
