Abstract: Umbilical hernias occur frequently in children but complications are rarely reported. This study assesses the incidence of complicated umbilical hernias in our patients, evaluates data for risk factors, and shows dissimilarities with those encountered in developed countries. This study reports all children operated for complications due to strangulated umbilical hernia over a period of 3 years. On the whole, 162 children had umbilical hernias treated during this period. Thirty (18.5%) of these had complicated … Show more

“…This equates to potentially five million DALYs averted by upscaling hernia repairs in Ghana alone. Other LMICs have also reported significant opportunities to reduce the burden of hernia by avoiding the nearly 20 per cent of hernias that present as emergencies and the associated 5–10 per cent mortality rate. As elective hernia repair costs only €4–10 (US $6–13; exchange rate 27 September 2013) per DALY averted, comparable with, or more affordable than, the provision of insecticide‐treated bed nets, oral rehydration salts or antiretroviral therapy, it should be considered a fundamental component of public health systems.…”

“…Congenital malformations of the digestive system were the most frequently associated malformations (35.3% of associated malformations, 9.7% of the total sample) and consisted mostly of umbilical hernia, a common malformation in black African children [27, 28]. Congenital malformations of the musculoskeletal system were the next most common malformations (19.6% of associated congenital malformations, 5.4% of the total sample).…”
