Herpes Simplex Virus 1, Cytomegalovirus and Epstein Barr Virus Detection in Patients with Chronic and Aggressive Periodontitis

Abstract: Recent investigations suggest that the viruses of the family Herpesviridae are associated with periodontal disease, demonstrating a possible association with the presence of Human Cytomegalovirus (HCMV), Herpes Simplex Virus 1 (HSV-1) and Epstein Barr Virus (EBV) in periodontal tissues. Aim: To analyze the association between the presence of HSV-1, HCMV and EBV in patients with chronic or aggressive periodontitis. Methods: Crevicular fluid samples were collected from 11 patients with aggressive periodontitis (… Show more

“…Hernández and co-workers detected CMV in 27.3% of aggressive periodontitis patients, but it was not detected in the chronic form and in healthy subjects (17). Compared to our result we detected that 2,8 % of our patients were with acute CMV.…”

“…Periodontal immunity includes overlapping innate and adaptive cellular and humoral responses , which, together with indigenous oral microbes , aim at controlling invading pathogens. In turn, periodontopathic bacteria and herpesviruses in marginal periodontitis (recent publications: ) and apical periodontitis (recent publications: ) elaborate a variety of defense mechanisms to circumvent or disrupt protective host immune reactions .…”

“…The association of various herpes viruses with several types of periodontal disease has been established by many studies (Ravi et al, 2017). Among the viruses, cytomegalovirus (CMV), Torque Teno Virus (TTV), and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) plays a major role (Hernández, 2016;Ramamurthy and Mg, 2018). Chemical antiplaque agents such as varnishes, dentifrices, and mouthwashes are used to improve oral health care (Kavarthapu and Thamaraiselvan, 2018).…”
