Herpesviral–bacterial interrelationships in aggressive periodontitis

Abstract: These results support the notion that the clinical outcome of some types of severe periodontal infection depends on the presence of specific herpesviruses and bacterial pathogens. Our findings open the door to testing a variety of hypotheses regarding the deleterious aspects of combined herpesviral-bacterial infections in periodontal sites.

“…3 The herpesviruses, especially Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and the human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) have been detected at destructive periodontitis and sites with active periodontal disease. 4 The higher prevalence of these viruses in combination with the anaerobic bacteria and the host immune factors may aggravate the progress of the disease. 5 There has been conflicting evidence found in a few studies from around the globe which suggest that the EBV and the HCMV are present at fewer periodontal sites than considered otherwise.…”

“…In other research, it has been associated with aggressive and chronic periodontitis (Bilichodmath et al, 2009;Botero et al, 2007;Contreras et al, 2000;Ling et al, 2004, Yapar et al, 2003Saygun et al, 2004). We found that 8% of the individuals in our study from northeastern Mexico suffering from chronic periodontitis had HSV-1 present in the periodontal pockets.…”

“…It is important to consider the composition of the subgingival microflora since this varies significantly when the periodontium is pathologically affected. Previous research on this disorder has focused on putative periodontal bacteria and their products (Saygun et al, 2004).…”

“…Research during the past 15 years has implied that herpesviruses are involved in the etiopathogeny of destructive periodontal disease (Saygun et al, 2004;Slots et al, 2004). Hopefully, increased knowledge of the immunovirology of cytomegalovirus and other herpes viruses in periodontitis may lead to a greater understanding of periodontal host responses and to more effective preventive and therapeutic interventions, including future vaccination against periodontopathic Herpes viruses.…”
