Herpesvirus in Bovines: Importance of Bovine Herpesvirus Type 1

Abstract: The chapter aims at providing readers with the overview of the herpesvirus infection in bovines. It includes the detailed etiology of the infection, discussing the virus characteristics, virus structure, genome, viral proteins, types and subtypes of the virus. Then, the chapter discusses the transmission and pathogenesis of the virus, which are very important as they help to control the virus spread, viral latency and clinical signs observed in the affected animals. Later, the chapter discusses the diagnosis o… Show more

“…BoHV-1 is an enveloped DNA virus and was selected for this study as it is of economic importance both to Ireland and internationally [27][28][29] . In addition, this virus has a well characterised and predictable pattern of infection.…”

“…These glycoproteins are major targets of immune cells. The gB, gC, gD and gE envelope glycoproteins were reported to be most abundant in the viral tegument layer (Kaur and Chandra 2016). Therefore, these glycoproteins were chosen to develop subunit vaccines or diagnostic reagents (for instance, the gB protein was used by IDEXX).…”
