Heteroepitaxial TiO2@W-doped VO2 core/shell nanocrystal films: preparation, characterization, and application as bifunctional window coatings

Abstract: We employed rutile TiO2 nanoparticles (TiNPs) as cores for coating with vanadium sols to grow the VO2(M) heteroepitaxially as shells. Needle-like structures gradually appeared on the TiNP surfaces after a sintering process.

“…Parkin and co‐workers prepared VO 2 /SiO 2 /TiO 2 multilayer films using atmospheric‐pressure CVD . Besides, core/shell nanoparticles such as W‐doped VO 2 @TiO 2 nanocrystal and VO 2 @TiO 2 nanorods have also been attempted. However, to our best knowledge, the highest T lum value of VO 2 /TiO 2 hybrid multifunctional coatings still remains limited, which are far from the demand of practical applications.…”

“…In many practical applications, oxide‐coated metal or nonmetal NPs are required to be deposited onto planar/curved surfaces or incorporated into polymer or inorganic matrices for processing and device fabrication 66. For example, heteroepitaxial core−shell TiO 2 ‐coated W‐doped VO 2 nanostructure films were fabricated by spin‐coating the preformed W‐doped VO 2 @TiO 2 nanostructure dispersions onto argon/oxygen plasma‐treated glass substrates for self‐cleaning and thermochromic window coatings 67. To make the best use of their plasmonic resonance properties, noble metal nanoparticles are envisioned to be incorporated into thermochromic or electrochromic oxide films to produce metal@oxide nanocomposite materials with combined plasmonic and thermochromic/electrochromic properties.…”

“…Photometric analysis of the HWTVC films before and after irradiation was performed to measure the degradation efficiency of MB (D%). 11 The absorbance of the samples was measured using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer having a resolution of 1 nm (Perkin-Elmer, lambda 25, 190-1100 nm). The decrease in the absorbance at l max of the samples after irradiation for a desired period of time allowed the determination of the rate of decolorization and, hence, the MB photodegradation efficiency, which also represented the activity of the HWTVC films.…”

“…30 We attributed the binding energies at 458.8 and 464.4 eV to the Ti 2p 3/2 and Ti 2p 1/2 binding energies, respectively, of TiNPs (Fig. 2d), corresponding to the position for Ti 4+ species in TiNPs (the reported value for pure Ti is 458.0-458.5 eV 11 ). The Ti 2p 3/2 peak shifted from 458.8 to 458.4 eV abruptly for T8V2, and remained at 458.6 eV for T6V4 and T4V6.…”
