Heterogeneity and Specificity of Inter‐Firm Knowledge Flows in Innovation Networks

Abstract: Literature on innovation networks reveals little of to what extent different types of knowledge are exchanged and combined by collaborating firms to foster innovation. Based on field research in the aerospace industrial cluster of Rome, this study investigates the exchange of technological, market and managerial knowledge. Using social network analysis, the paper shows that the three types of knowledge are unevenly distributed and exchanged, thus revealing that the process of exchange is knowledge-specific. Fu… Show more

“…In particular, inter-organisational networks are an important aspect of the innovation process, with network scholars stressing that innovation is a complex process often requiring knowledge flow between organisations. (Meagher andRogers, 2004, Lichtenthaler, 2005;Sammarra and Biggiero 2008). Increasingly, this process is viewed as a systemic undertaking, i.e.…”

“…The perceived benefits and/or overall satisfaction of partners with the knowledge transfer process have been frequently proposed and used empirically as an indication of alliance performance (Becerra-Fernandez & Sabherwal, 2001;Brinkerhoff, 2002;Chini, 2004). Perceptual measures are claimed to be just as important and informative as more objective ones (Becerra-Fernandez & Sabherwal, 2001;Reuer et al, 2002;Sammarra & Biggiero, 2008). The degree of satisfaction of partners and stakeholders can provide valuable insights into the direction that the project is following and contributing and constraining factors, which provide information supportive for adaptive and learning purposes.…”

“…Although some studies investigate inter-firm knowledge flows at a macro level, such as in innovation networks (Sammarra & Biggiero, 2008), few investigations pertain to ambidexterity in clusters (Ferrary, 2011). With this study, we compare knowledge management strategies and ambidexterity beyond the organisational level, namely, at interorganisational and cluster levels.…”
