Heterogeneity of Framework Ti(IV) in Ti−Silicalite as Revealed by the Adsorption of NH3. Combined Calorimetric and Spectroscopic Study

Abstract: The room-temperature adsorption of NH3 on Ti-silicalite (TS-1) was studied by means of IR and XANES-EXAFS spectroscopies and by microcalorimetry. The propensity of framework tetrahedral Ti(IV) heteroatoms to expand their coordination shell upon adsorption of NH3 was monitored by the perturbation induced on the Ti-sensitive framework stretching band (960 cm -1 ) and on the preedge peak at 4967 eV in XANES spectra. In both cases a modification of the local geometry of titanium sites upon adsorption of NH3 as an … Show more

“…Usually the adsorption enthalpy is measured by the isosteric method 717,[722][723][724][725] or by microcalorimetry, 168,170,266,336,405,537,600,716,722,[726][727][728][729][730][731][732][733] both are widely employed in the investigation of molecular adsorption in zeolites. More peculiar bands are obtained in the event that the probe molecule is more complex than a simple diatomic molecule.…”

“…When acting as an electrophile, CO 2 reacts with oxygen defects or hydroxide species and gives rise to carbonate or bicarbonate species, which are both particularly abundant on the Mn 3 O 4 surface. The surface acidity was studied by means of ammonia adsorption at room temperature: Ammonia is probably the most frequently used probe molecule for the acidity assessment of solid catalysts, because it can interact with both Brønsted acidic sites (by forming ammonium ions) and Lewis acidic sites (by forming acidic-basic adducts) [53]. Negative and positive bands correspond therefore to species disappearing and appearing after ammonia dosage, respectively.…”

“…The simple treatment with ammonium acetate, currently used to clean-up the catalyst, [14] did not promote any titanium leaching, with negligible change of the catalytic activity of TS-1, tested on benzene oxidation. Conversely, using ammonium bifluoride, the extraction of a small amount of titanium was detected, but, also in this case, with only a minor effect on the selectivity of the catalyst.…”
