One example of this is the DNA amplification which seems to follow stress caused by 205 YAOLA B A S S I recision of the tissues, as has been observed in Solanum tuberosum tuber tissues (Watanabe & Imaseki, 1973), in Nicotiana tabacum leaves (Gense, 1980), in Vicia fuba roots and in various other types of plants (see Bassi, in preparation). Analogous effects can follow treatment of plants with metals : for instance biochemical analysis carried out by separation of different fractions of 3zP-labelled D N A by chromatography on a column containing methylated-albumin-kieselguhr (MAK), demonstrated synthesis of metabolically labile D N A in aluminium-treated roots of Hordeum vulgare (Sampson et al, 1965).…”
