Heterogeneity of the risk of suicidal behavior in bipolar‐spectrum disorders

Abstract: Suicidal behavior is distributed unevenly in families of probands with BD, aggregating in a subset of families. Our results also suggest that partially overlapping sets of genetic factors may underlie BD and suicide.

“…The procedures of the assessment of suicidal behavior are detailed in Cavazzoni et al. and included the use of SADS‐L for collecting information on lifetime occurrence of suicidal behavior. Briefly, suicide attempt was defined as an intentional self‐inflicted injury with self‐destructive intent.…”

“…In a previous study, we investigated the relationship between the genetic vulnerability to suicide and the genetic predisposition to MAD, and BD in particular, in a consecutive sample of 78 families . The distribution of the risk of suicidal behavior was heterogeneous, with completed suicides and suicide attempts aggregating in two subgroups of families (high and intermediate risk).…”

“…[Notably, prior studies suggest that suicidal behavior may be more prevalent in first-degree relatives of bipolar than non-bipolar probands (9)]. In this special issue, Cavazzoni et al (10) extend prior findings in this area, noting not only that firstdegree relatives of individuals with BD have an elevated risk for suicide attempts, but moreover, that family histories of BD may be more common in people who have made a suicide attempt.…”

“…Mood disorders are found in 80-85% (39)(40)(41) and schizophrenia in 9-13% of patients dying each year due to suicide (42). Other risk factors in the field of psychiatry also exist, including personality disorders and substance and alcohol dependence (43,44) and family history of suicide (43,45,46). Race and ethnic group (47), problematic coping skills (48), and environmental variables like recent psychosocial stress (49,50) and occupational problems or interpersonal problems with spouse or romantic partner (51) also constitute risk factors.…”
