Heterogeneous Backhaul for Cloud-Based Mobile Networks

Abstract: Abstract-To meet the increasing capacity demands of future mobile networks, dense deployment of radio access nodes in combination with partly centralized processing by means of a cloudbased architecture is a promising option. In such an architecture, the design and optimization of the backhaul plays a crucial role. In this paper, we review different backhaul technologies available and discuss their characteristics for use in cloud-based networks. We point out how a heterogeneous backhaul network and a flexible… Show more

“…In this case a new kind of backhaul appears (referred to as fronthaul). Some recent works [12] analyze the way for this distributed set of remote units (known as Remote Radio Head) to be connected to the baseband unit where in some cases a joint optimization of RAN and backhaul could be considered [13].…”

“…Regarding the backhaul connecting the distributed RRHs and the radio cloud infrastructure, the results of [1] showed that fiber and millimeter-wave (mmWave) were the most promising backhaul technologies. More related work could be found in [9].…”

“…However, the use of optical fiber make H-CRAN suffer from stationary and expensive deployments. Therefore, the wireless backhaul technology is also considered, for example, mmWave operating at 60 GHz, 70/80 GHz and 90 GHz bands is regarded as an alternative wireless backhaul technology [1]. Thus, we mainly focus on the security threats towards wireless backhauls.…”
