Heterogeneous photocatalysis of real textile wastewater: Evaluation of reaction kinetics and characterization

Abstract: Real textile wastewater collected from the cotton dyeing bath of a fabric dyeing and finishing plant was subjected to heterogeneous photocatalysis using Ag(+) doped TiO(2) under UV irradiation in a batch reactor. The photocatalysts were characterized by FESEM, XRD, EDS, FTIR, DRS and BET analyses. The kinetics of the reaction was also evaluated. Colour removal was more than 88%, 94% and 99%, respectively for undiluted, 2 times diluted and 5 times diluted wastewater with Ag(+) doped TiO(2) (2.5 g/L) after UV ir… Show more

“…Various instruments used in the study were reported elsewhere. [28] Catalyst characterization Commercially available microsized TiO 2 obtained from Merck India and the silver ion doped micro TiO 2 prepared in the laboratory by liquid impregnation method were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), Xray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared analysis (FTIR), diffused reflectance spectra (DRS) and micropore analysis. The details of the analyses were reported elsewhere.…”

“…This model assumes that adsorption is a rapid equilibrium process and that the rate-determining step of the reaction involves the species present in a monolayer at the solid-liquid interface. Furthermore if the adsorption of MET onto the surface of the photocatalysts is very low, ads ⋅ can be neglected in the denominator simplifying the equation to a pseudo-first-order equation as given by [46] = − = ads ⋅ H-L ⋅ = ⋅ .…”
