The growing needs for wireless connectivity in smart industries raises opportunities for mobile service providers as well as industrial players, also known as verticals. This inevitably has increased challenges for both the parties involved. This is increasingly true for timing and synchronization requirements. Within this context, in this article, we present a detailed analysis of 'time synchronization errors'. These errors are commonly known to affect the delivery of accurate time needed to synchronize the robots and machines present inside the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) domain. To eliminate such errors, we propose a novel compensation technique to compensate for the random errors which occur due to the propagation delay in the wireless medium. The article concludes by providing numerous results based on simulations with discussions proving the efficacy of our proposal.

Fine-grained and wide-scale connectivity is a precondition to fully digitalize the manufacturing industry. Driven by this need, new technologies such as time-sensitive networking (TSN), fifth-generation (5G) wireless networks, and industrial Internet-of-things (IIoT) are being applied to industrial communication networks to reach the desired connectivity spectrum. With TSN emerging as a wired networking solution, converging information technology (IT) and operational technology (OT) data streams, 5G is upscaling its access and core networks to function as an independent or a transparent TSN carrier in demanding OT use-cases. In this article, we discuss the drivers for future industrial wireless systems and review the role of 5G and its industrial-centric evolution towards meeting the strict performance standards of factories. We also elaborate on the 5G deployment options, including frequency spectrum allocation and private networks, to help the factory owners discern various dimensions of solution space and concerns to integrate 5G in industrial networks.

In industrial applications, it is necessary to select different types of networks according to different communication requirements. To meet this requirement, a converged network of wired and wireless networks is frequently employed. Notably, fulfilling the end-to-end transmission requirements of converged networks is challenging. As a solution, converged-network scheduling methods have proved valuable. In this paper, a network scheduling method for the convergence of industrial wireless networks and time-sensitive networks is proposed. Additionally, the proposed method is tested and verified. The results show that the end-to-end average transmission delay is reduced and the jitter is acceptable.
