Heterogeneous wireless sensor networks for flood prediction decision support systems

Abstract: Abstract-Recent advancements in the fields of sensor equipment and wireless sensor networks have opened the window of opportunity for many innovative applications. In this paper, we propose a new architecture for building decision support systems using heterogeneous wireless sensor networks. The architecture is built around standard hardware and existing wireless sensor networks technology. We show the effectiveness of the proposed architecture by applying it to a flood prediction scenario.

“…Smart risk assessment systems to predict flood water level by using Belief Rule Base (BRB) have been identified in [5]. In addition, an architecture for building a decision support system for flood prediction using a heterogeneous WSN was proposed in [6]. An agricultural application developed by using WSN where various environmental parameters considered [7].…”

“…The system also provides an example of using web technologies with expert system. In our previous work [4], we proposed a new architecture for building decision support systems using heterogeneous wireless sensor networks. Using this architecture, we described a smart risk assessment system using belief-rule based decision support systems in [16] and [18] where a case study was carried out on the location-dependent service, aimed for tourists.…”

“…An efficient heterogeneous wireless sensor network (WSN) is needed for collecting and transmitting data as sensors are deployed in harsh environment. In [4], we proposed an efficient heterogeneous WSN network combination of ZigBee, Ethernet, Wi-Fi connectivity and SMS suitable for flood prediction.…”

“…It is therefore a great need to secure the communication medium against intrusions by applying reliable security systems, such as IDSs with intelligent security measures [1] [2][3] [4]. Besides, it is important to ensure the security by detecting intrusion in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) based systems, which are deployed to assess the risk of flooding, to support the irrigation and many other areas [5] [12].…”
