Heteromorphic sex chromosomes in three species of the genus Leporinus (Pisces, Anostomidae)

Abstract: The present paper describes three cases of heteromorphic sex chromosomes in fishes of the genus Leporinus (Anostomidae). An XX/XY type was found in Leporinus lacustris and a ZZ/ZW type in L. silvestrii and L. obtusidens. These facts agree with the observations of Ebeling and Chen (1970), who suggested that heterogamety evolved not once but many times among the teleosts.

“…The karyotype of L. elongatus of both the MogiGuaçú and the Paranapanema populations had 2n = 54 chromosomes for both sexes, with ZW sex chromosomes characterizing the female karyotype, as already reported by Galetti et al (1981). Most chromosomes are slightly heterochromatic in their telomeric regions, with some pairs presenting centromeric and/or pericentromeric blocks (Figure 1).…”

“…(Received 28 August 7997 -Accepted 12 November 1997) CHROMOSOME DIVERSITY Neotropical fishes present a high chromosome diversity showing a wide diploid number variation range (see Oliveira et al, 1988, for a revision), including different levels of ploidies (i.e., Morelli et al, 1983b;Almeida-Toledo et al, 1985;Venere & Galetti, 1985;Oliveira et al, 1992), different types of sex chromosome systems (i.e., Galetti et al, 1981;Bertollo et al, 1983;Almeida-Toledo et al, 1984;Galetti & Foresti, 1986, 1987, chromosome supernumeraries (Foresti et al, 1989;Fenocchio & Bertollo, 1990;Maistro et al, 1992;Salvador & Moreira-Filho, 1992), and several cases of polymorphisms, specially related to heterochromatin and NOR sites (i.e., Galetti et al, 1984Galetti et al, , 1991a.…”

“…Several cases of sexual chromosomes have already been described among neotropical fishes, from XY or ZW systems involving males or females (Galetti et al, 1981(Galetti et al, , 1995aGaletti & Foresti, 1986, 1987Moreira-Filho et al, 1993), respectively, to multiple systems such as XY X Y 2 or XjX 2 Y in males (Bertollo et al, 1983;Almeida-Toledo et al, 1984), and ZWjW 2 in females (Moreira- Filho et al, 1980). A good example of sex chromosomes occurs in the genus Leporinus, a characiform of the family Anostomidae.…”

“…The diploid number of 54 comprises metacentric and submetacentric chromosomes, and the karyotypes of most species carry a single NOR bearing pair. [21][22][23][24] The genus Leporinus has been well studied and 25 of the 87 species in this genus have been karyotyped. The presence of a peculiar sex chromosome system with female heterogamety is restricted to a few species in this genus, i.e., L. elongatus, L. macrocephalus, L. obtusidens, L. reinhardtii, L. silvetrii, L. conirostris, and L. trifasciatus.…”
