Heterosis, inbreeding depression and their relationship with genetic divergence in sesame ( Sesamum indicum L.)

Abstract: Seven parents (CST2002, MT34, OS-Sel-2, TKG22, AAUDT9304-14-4, B67 and Rama), their 21 F 1 s and 21 F 2 s were grown in summer 2003 in a randomized block design with three replications. Heterosis and inbreeding depression were studied for seven important yield-contributing characters (plant height, branch number plant −1 , capsules plant −1 , seeds capsule −1 , 1000-seed weight, stick yield plant −1 and seed yield plant −1 ). Maximum heterosis for seed yield plant −1 over the mid- and better-pa… Show more

“…Non-significant linear regression of heterosis for grain dry weight with mean performance of hybrids on GD has been reported by Shieh and Thseng (2002). The extents of correlation coefficients found between GD SSR with BPH and MPH in the present study were not large enough for the prediction of hybrid performance in sesame as earlier reported by Banerjee and Kole (2010). Similar results with weak correlation have been reported in many crops (Oliveira et al 2004).…”

“…Very few studies have used genetic distance to predict hybrid performance in sesame. Some researchers reported association between marker-based genetic distance and heterosis (Banerjee and Kole 2010), whilst others have reported no association with heterosis (Dikshit and Swain 2000). The potential application of markers in determining the degree of heterosis in sesame is, therefore, inconclusive.…”

“…Two cross combinations viz., TMV 6 × Thilathara and VRI 3 × Thilottama registered significant positive standard heterosis for seed yield per plant. Heterosis for seed yield per plant was earlier reported by Singh et al (2005), Banerjee and Kole, (2010) and Jadhav and Mohir (2013). The cross TMV 6 × Thilathara recorded the highest positive significant heterosis over the standard parent (39.32 %).…”

“…Combining ability gives an idea about the nature and magnitude of gene action in inheritance of biometrical or quantitative traits, which helps in identifying parents with good general combining ability effects and hybrids or crosses with good specific combining ability effects. Selection of parents based on per se performance alone is not a better option because parents with superior phenotype can result in inferior or poor hybrids in later generations (Banerjee and Kole, 2010). Hence it is important to select parents based on per se performance and high gca value for the traits to be improved.…”

“…anaman wijen (Sesamum indicum L.) merupakan salah satu tanaman penghasil minyak nabati penting dunia yang penggunaannya cenderung meningkat karena bermanfaat untuk kesehatan (Banerjee and Kole, 2010). Biji ataupun minyak wijen dimanfaatkan sebagai bahan makanan ataupun dalam sektor industri berupa bahan dasar kosmetik, obat-obatan, sabun, dan insektisida.…”
