Heuristic and Optimized Sensor Tasking Observation Strategies with Exemplification for Geosynchronous Objects

Abstract: With the new space fence technology, the catalog of known space objects is expected to increase to the order of 100'000 objects. Objects need to be initially detected, and sufficient observations need to be collected to allow for a first orbit determination. Furthermore, the objects have to be re-observed regularly, to keep them in the catalog, as the position uncertainty of the objects increases over time, due to unmodeled dynamic effects. Only a small number of ground-based and even fewer space-based sensors… Show more

“…Traditional sensor management methods in SSA can be broadly divided into heuristic and information-theoretical methods. Heuristic methods generate sensor tasking solutions without involving state information and mainly focus on a few evaluation indicators, such as improving the signal-to-noise ratio of measurement data or reducing the uncertainty of cataloging targets [71,72]. The informationtheoretic method primarily determines the observation order of the target by maximizing the information gain of the control instruction.…”

“…However, substantial computational power is still required to evaluate the possible actions. Instead of using an information-theoretic approach, Frueh et al (2018) model the SSA sensor tasking problem as an optimization problem and approximate the sensor tasking problem with a near-optimal formulation and a greedy solution mechanism [ 9 ].…”

“…The first satellite collision event in human history occurred over Siberia on 11 February 2009, when an Iridium satellite launched by the United States in 1997 collided with a Cosmos2251 satellite launched by Russia in 1993, highlighting the importance of deploying space target monitoring systems [3,4]. As the space environment grows increasingly complicated, countries represented by the United States are putting in place a strategic layout of space-based space target surveillance systems to improve their ability to govern space resources [5].…”
