We investigate the efficiency of domain-specific heuristic strategies in mastering and predicting pericyclic six-electron rearrangements. Based on recent research findings on these types of reactions a new concept has been developed that should help students identify and describe six-electron rearrangements more readily in complex molecules. The goal of this qualitative study with chemistry majors is to understand the way students cope with this new concept depending on their prior knowledge, and to reveal the merits and limitations of this approach. The results suggest that the use of domain-specific heuristic strategies provides the students with process-orientated thinking skills to identify six-electron rearrangements and to determine as well as predict reaction mechanisms and outcomes. The explicit emphasis on recurrent patterns and structure-property relationship fosters the conceptual thinking of the learner.

Ars-legendi-Fakultätenpreis Den Ars-legendi-Fakultätenpreis verleiht der Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft gemeinsam mit der jeweiligen berufsständischen Gesellschaft, darunter die Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker.Inder Chemie ging der Preis diesmal an ein Te am der Universität Gießen: Richard Gçttlich, Nicole Graulich und Siegfried Schindler.S ie wurden für die gemeinsam mit Kollegen der Fachdidaktik durchgeführte Entwicklung von Modulen ausgezeichnet, die Studenten Freiräume für selbstbestimmtes Lernen und Arbeiten lassen. Das Te am setzt E-Learning-Methoden ein, entwickelt neue Konzepte und fordert von den Studenten individuell geschaffene Videos,P oster,C omics oder Interviews. Richard Gçttlich studierte an der Universität Marburg und promovierte dort 1996 bei Reinhard W. Hoffmann. Nach einem Postdoktorat bei Masakatsu Shibasaki an der Universität Tokio (1996-1997) habilitierte er sich bis 2003 an der Universität Münster und blieb dort noch bis 2005. Danach wurde er auf eine Professur für organische Chemie an die Universität Gießen berufen. Gçttlich und seine Gruppe befassen sich mit der Synthese von Stickstoffheterocyclen als Liganden, für die medizinische Chemie und für die Anwendung in Materialien. In ChemMedChem hat er über die Synthese und die Eigenschaften von Bis(3-chlorpiperidinen) berichtet. [1] Nicole Graulich studierte an der Universität Gießen und promovierte dort 2011 bei Peter R. Schreiner auf dem Gebiet der heuristischen Chemie;sie war Coautorin eines Concept-Artikels in Chemistry-A European Journal über Additionsreaktionen [2a] und eines Focus Review in Chemistry-An Asian Journal über Eliminierungen. TheA rs-legendi-Fakultätenpreis is presented by the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft (a joint intitiative of companies and foundations) in conjunction with the professional societies in the respective fields,i ncluding the Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker (GDCh;G erman Chemical Society). Thewinners in the field of chemistry are a team from the University of Gießen: Richard Gçttlich, Nicole Graulich,and Siegfried Schindler. Theteam were honored for their work, carried out in collaboration with colleagues from the area of teaching methodology,i nt he development of modules that give students freedom for self-paced learning and working.T he team has introduced elearning methods,d eveloped new concepts,a nd requires students to produce individual work such as videos,p osters,comics,orinterviews. Richard Gçttlich studied at the University of Marburg, where he completed his doctorate (supervised by Reinhard W. Hoffmann) in 1996. After postdoctoral work with Masakatsu Shibasaki at the University of Tokyo (1996-1997), he carried out his habilitation at the University of Münster (1997-2003), and held various faculty positions there (2004-2005). He was made Professor of Organic Chemistry at the University of Gießen in 2005. Gçttlich and his group are interested in the preparation of nitrogen-containing heterocycles as ligands,f or medicinal chemistry,a nd for materials applications.H eh as reported in ChemMedChem on the synthesis and properties of bis-3-chloropiperidines. [1] Nicole Graulich studied at the University of Gießen, where she worked with Peter R.
