Hevea Latex: Effect of Proteins and Electrolytes on Colloidal Behavior.

Abstract: It is generally recognized that the protein adsorbed on the rubber particles in Hevea latex plays a predominant róle in connection with stability and coagulation phenomena. Although the function of proteins as protective substances in colloidal dispersions is well known, very little exact information, is available regarding the mechanism of their protective action.

“…Zeta potential analysis gives an indication on surface charge behaviour on rubber particle surface, thus distinct chemical nature of the absorbed layers on the surface of rubber particle is reflected in the difference in the zeta potential value consequently the colloidal stability of natural rubber latex. Adsorbed proteins on the surface of latex particle are reported to contain both acidic and alkaline functional groups that carry positive and negative charge respectively [20]. HA-NRL is composed of phospholipids, carbohydrates, proteins and other non-rubber constituents which contribute charge species that gives high negative zeta potential value [3].…”

“…HA-NRL is composed of phospholipids, carbohydrates, proteins and other non-rubber constituents which contribute charge species that gives high negative zeta potential value [3]. Perturbation of the proteins layer by urea might compensate the surface charge hence compressed the diffuse layer and subsequently reduced the negative zeta potential value [20].…”

“…The present paper describes investigations on the proteins of fresh latex serum. Before 1942 the presence of three protein fractions in fresh serum had been demonstrated (Bishop, 1927;Kemp & Straitiff, 1940). Similar fractions were also obtained from ammonia-preserved latex, though the presence of ammonia modified the properties of the proteins in some respects (Kemp & Straitiff, 1940;Bondy & Freundlich, 1938).…”

Similar fractions were also obtained from ammonia-preserved latex, though the presence of ammonia modified the properties of the proteins in some respects (Kemp & Straitiff, 1940;Bondy & Freundlich, 1938). Later, a more detailed electrophoretic analysis of the proteins in unammoniated serum was carried out by Roe & Ewart (1942), who demonstrated the presence of seven electrophoretically distinct protein constituents.…”

“…Thus, the final stability of the blend will be determined by the degree of interaction between either the soap and inorganic salts present in the synthetic system with proteins, or their degradation products, and other ammonium salts which contribute to the stability of natural latcx (1,8).
