“…Substituting non-magnetic Ga on the Mn 3+ sites slightly increases the Curie temperature while systematically reducing the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature [16]. However, the reduction of the spin-lattice interactions in the Ga doped system increases the thermal conductivity, despite the introduction of additional impurity scattering [17].…”

“…Mn(x) position [38] 0.324 72 [15] 0.317 7(9) [35] 0.333 0(17) [29] 0.320 8(18) [39] (at 10 K) 0.333 5 (6) largest amount of stiffening was observed for C 66 (∼3%) and C 11 (∼1%), in comparison with C 33 and C 44 (<0.1%), corresponding to a stronger influence of magnetic interactions directed within the (001) plane rather than perpendicular to it. Using a Landau description the relevant strain/order parameter coupling term was determined to be λe 2 S 2 ⊥ , where e is a strain, λ is a strain/order parameter coupling constant, and S ⊥ is the in-plane spin component representing the magnetic order parameter.…”

“…Some of the most successful examples of magnetoelectric multiferroics have come from the hexagonal rare earth manganites, RMnO 3 , and significant research has been undertaken to understand the magnetic and ferroelectric properties of these compounds (see, for example, [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8]). Of these materials YMnO 3 , with a layered structure with Y ions placed between sheets of corner sharing MnO 5 triangular bipyramids, has been of particular interest [9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16].…”

“…5 As the IR further decreases from Y, Ho to Lu, RMnO 3 crystallize into a hexagonal structure if crystals are grown at ambient pressure. 6 The antiferromagnetic coupling between the spins of the Mn 3+ ions within an (001) plane is frustrated, which lowers the spin-ordering Néel temperature. In the case of R = Gd, Tb and Dy, it is worth mentioning that, as the temperature decreases from the incommensurate phase, a lock-in transition takes place to enter a ferroelectric phase, 7 confirming the interplay between electric and magnetic phenomena.…”
