Hf‐Nd‐Sr Isotopic Composition as Fingerprint for Long‐Range Transported Eolian Dust Deposition in Glacier Snowpack of Eastern Tibetan Plateau

Abstract: This study presents the Hf-Nd-Sr isotopic compositions of eolian dust deposited on glacier snowpacks along a longitude transect on the eastern Tibetan Plateau, in order to trace its source areas and the provenance of long-range transported (LRT) Asian dust on the eastern margin of Tibetan Plateau. Most of the glacier snowpack samples from northern locations (Qiyi and Lenglongling Glaciers) indicated similar Hf-Nd-Sr isotopic ratios with that of large central Asian deserts. However, the southern locations (Dagu… Show more

“…Therefore, glacier snowpack dust and cryoconite in the TP have a unique advantage in that they provide information on high-altitude dust processes (Dong et al, 2016(Dong et al, , 2020. Studies have shown that arid deserts of the TP are the main source of snowpack/cryoconite dust for glaciers in this region (Dong et al, 2016(Dong et al, , 2018. The 234 U/ 238 U isotopic ratios of typical glacial snowpack/cryoconite samples (including snowpack/cryoconite of the Laohugou Glacier and the Dunkemadi Glacier in this work) combined with the U-Sr-Nd isotope data were used to investigate the contribution of TP dust to the glaciers in surrounding areas.…”

“…The GSD characteristics indicate that three types of clastic sediments exhibit distinct GSDs in the surface sediments of Lake Lugu (Figure 3b). Samples near the center of the lake exhibit a peak at ~4 µm (Figure 3b, S17) which is similar to the grain size of the long-distance aeolian component in the Baishui glacier (81 km southwest of Lake Lugu; Dong et al, 2018). The GSDs of samples from nearshore shallow water areas near the estuary of Shankua River (Figure 3b, S46) are impacted mainly by runoff inputs coupled with lake currents.…”

“…12 glacier (local soil: -13.6), -13.7--8.58 for Qiyi, -13.8--13.6 for Shiyi glacier (local soil: -13.8--13.6), -12.1--12.0 for Dabanshan snowpack, and -10.9--7.0 for Lenglongling glacier (Fig. 2, Dong et al, 2018). It is very clear that, based on local soil data, regional dust makes a significant contribution to these glaciers.…”

“…Region V: Samples from the glaciers in the Qilian Mountains include snow samples from the Qilian Mountains and sand (soil and loess) samples from the Hexi Corridor, with εNd(0) values from 0.712349 to 0.73211 and 87 Sr/ 86 Sr values from -15.7 to -7.0 (Wei et al, 2017;Dong et al, 2018). The Nd(0) values have an increasing trend along the Hexi Corridor from west to east: -15.7--12.9 for Laohugou No.…”
