Hidradenitis suppurativa: Basic considerations for its approach: A narrative review

Abstract: Hidradenitis suppurativa is a chronic and debilitating skin disease, whose lesions can range from inflammatory nodules to abscesses and fistulas in the armpits, groin, perineum, inframammary region. Diagnosis can be confused with a large number of clinical pictures, and although studies on hidradenitis suppurativa are not so scarce in the literature, doctors are often unaware of this disease and therefore its diagnosis is often late. Pharmacological treatment ranges from retinoids to immunosuppression and radi… Show more

“…Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory skin condition characterized by painful and recurrent lesions typically over intertriginous areas and can impact the physical, mental, and socioeconomic well‐being of affected individuals 1–4 . The lesions of HS in children and youth commonly appear in the axillae, groin, perineum, and inframammary regions, similar to adult cases 5 . HS predominantly affects adults, with an overall reported global prevalence range of 0.0003%–4%, and is recognized as a rare disease in children and adolescents 6,7 …”

“…These debilitations can be present in children as well and predispose them to various mental health challenges. In both adults and children, the chronic and recurrent nature of HS, physical manifestations of lesions in sensitive areas, and other impacts on body image have been shown to contribute to feelings of embarrassment, self‐consciousness, and social isolation 5,9,13,14 . Pediatric HS has become an increasingly studied disorder, partly due to its potential to affect the life course and development of affected children 15 .…”

“…Patients with HS suffer a significant reduction in quality of life (QoL) with increased risk of depression, anxiety, sexual dysfunction, and low self-esteem [1,3]. The management of HS has expanded significantly over the past few years, and this includes lifestyle changes, topical therapies, systemic therapies, and surgical therapies [4]. Biologics are rapidly emerging as a therapeutic modality used in multiple inflammatory conditions including HS.…”
