Abstract: O estudo analisa e questiona a implantação de usinas hidrelétricas no planalto circundante à planície pantaneira. Show more

“…Ecological processes of nutrient cycling and flood pulse that cause anoxia in the aquatic system, a phenomenon known as diquada or decoada, have been studied as traditional ecological knowledge (Da Silva 1984), its ecological causes and effects (Calheiros et al 2018, Andrade et al 2015. The impacts of this ecological process may have its dimensions expanded due to large nutrient intake caused by inadequate activities in the flooded areas of the Pantanal and the Paraguay River Basin as a whole (Hamilton et al 1997).…”

(Junk, 1989;Fiori e Ciali, 1999;Fiori et al 2001;Paranhos et al 2003;Grizio e Souza Filho, 2010;Calheiros et al 2018).…”

“…The advancement of unsustainable agroecosystems in the UPB’s plateau region has resulted in higher sediment and nutrients inputs to the Pantanal lowlands, and subsequently reduced the provision of ecosystem services, such as nutrient retention and recycling, water purification, and fish stocks, among others (Bergier, 2013). Additionally, the Pantanal has been becoming continuously and gradually contaminated by pollutants, such as nitrogen, phosphorus and agrochemicals, from agricultural activities (Calheiros et al., 2006). Therefore, there is an urgent need to understand the drivers of changes to nutrient cycling in the plateau region, where the VRW is located, and to adopt good practices that minimize the impacts of the land use change on ecosystem service provision.…”
